Investor relations is a very important component to any company that needs to get investor attention. Therefore it is more important to be prepared for exposure to the investor public before moving forward with an investor relations campaign.

Very simply, when a company does something newsworthy, a press release is appropriate. However, only a limited number of people will know about your company, or even see your press release.

There are additional items of news that should also be disclosed by SEC filings, such as an 8-K event. This applies to reporting companies that do something their investors have a right to know, such as hiring a new President, or engagement of a firm such as Southwest. SEC filings might be accompanied by a press release, so that investors could learn of the event.

Reason for Investor Relations Campaign

To bring the company to the attention of investors that will buy the common stock of the company. Generally speaking, the more the buying, the higher the price, and that is what a company wants when borrowing money or offering stock to raise money.

Who performs an Investor Relations Campaign?

This can be any person or business that can promise exposure of a company to the type of investors noted above. For our purposes, these people or companies are referred to as IR Firms.

IR Firms claim to have an internet following of investors to buy your stock. The IR Firms charge a fee to expose your company to their investors.

Assuming, the IR Firm(s) is legitimate, the republishing of a company's press release and other information on the company will attract buying of the company's stock.

A focus on whether or not the services are effective is next, but first, before a campaign is commenced, the company should be positioned to receive the investor exposure. Said differently, is there some reason the company's stock would be attractive. This sounds simple, but it is just that simple!

For example, matters newsworthy for a press release may include:

• Does the company need a little money to perform a new contract that will generate earnings?

• Did the company recently raise the cash to make such an acquisition and the earnings are around the corner?

• Did the company recently complete an acquisition or buy out competition that will increase earnings?

• Did a company recently settle a law suit removing the chance of imminent losses?

These are the types of information that will influence the price of a company's common stock.

Now, the focus is on the legitimacy of the IR Firm. Campaigns can cost from $5,000 to $100,000, but the price of a bad firm is devastating. Our job here is two-fold:

One - to make certain the company is prepared for a campaign and/or if a campaign is the right use of corporate resources.

Two - to make certain the IR Firm has been successful with its client companies.

Southwest serves to investigate and negotiate with IR Firms.
